Background
Dawn is the time that marks the beginning of twilight before sunrise. It is recognized by the appearance of indirect sunlight being scattered in Earth's atmosphere, when the centre of the Sun's disc has reached 18° below the observer's horizon. This morning twilight period will last until sunrise, when direct sunlight outshines the diffused light.
Dawn can certainly look amazing. I remember seeing the sun rise above the clouds while on board a plane – that was special. The colours cannot be described. Another event I remember, maybe even more special, was seeing the sun rise in the mountains of Tenerife after watching Halley’s comet during a night of April in 1986. I think the colours of dawn are never quite the same. Some gemstones however capture the colours quite well. To me, one of them is Iolite.
The name "iolite" comes from the Greek word for violet. It has also been called "water-sapphire" and "Vikings' Compass" because of its usefulness in determining the direction of the sun on overcast days, the Vikings having used it for this purpose.
A very special gemstone. I've included some making-of shots so you can see everything in detail.
PLEASE NOTE that gemstones are sensitive to perfumes, lotions, hand sanitisers etc. Care needs to also be taken not to immerse the stone in water, sea water or chlorine water. Ultrasonic cleaners must NOT be used as they can damage the stone.
– Remove your jewellery before doing any practical activities
– Apply hair and beauty products before putting your jewellery on
– Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean your jewellery. For a deeper clean, you may use warm, soapy water and a soft toothbrush
