Inspired by Saturn’s summer, and the subsequently golden hexagon at its north pole, I have made these studs in 9ct gold.
They measure 0.9cm wide and 0.8cm tall.
On this occasion I thought I’d share a few facts about this very special material.
Human fascination with gold is as old as recorded history. Small amounts of natural gold have been found in Spanish caves used during the late Paleolithic period, c. 40,000 BC.
Gold artifacts made their first appearance at the very beginning of the pre-dynastic period in Egypt. The oldest known map of a gold mine was drawn in the 19th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt (1320–1200 BC), whereas the first written reference to gold was recorded in the 12th Dynasty around 1900 BC.
Throughout history, gold has been treasured for its natural beauty and radiance. For this reason, many cultures have imagined gold to represent the sun.
Although they never succeeded in the attempt to create gold from inferior metals, the alchemists did promote an interest in systematically finding out what can be done with substances, and this laid the foundation for today's chemistry. Their symbol for gold was the circle with a point at its center (☉), which was also the ancient Chinese character for the Sun (2953 BC).
Gold is thought to have been produced in supernova nucleosynthesis, and from the collision of neutron stars, and to have been present in the dust from which the Solar System formed.
One thing is for certain: gold has a very special attraction. Truly magical.
